Dancing for beginners: Great way to lose weight, have fun with your partner, and meet new people

Natasha in Waltham, Massachusetts, writes, “I read your article on tango dance as a great hobby to stay fit and also as something to do on a date.  I would like to dance, but I think I am really bad at it, and my husband is worse than me.  I wonder if there is hope to improve.”

Of course, there is hope.  If you two are conscious about other people watching you, I suggest you first take your own dance lessons in the privacy of your home.  You can buy an instructional DVD on a type of dance you like.  Here are a few that we like and have recommended to other LuvCube.com fans:

Breakdance Step-by-Step

Learn To Dance : Go Fatima !

Paula Abdul's Get Up and Dance!

After you feel comfortable that you have made progress and learned some of the steps, you may want to join a class in a continuing education program at a local institution or other types of dance lessons or you should start dancing in clubs.  You will notice that wherever you go, there will be only a few couples that are really good.  Most others are like you.

You may also consider taking an easy form of dance that you can always change later on.  I find that merengue is easy.  The same applies to country-dance, and for women, belly dance.  On the other hand, tango, flamenco, and Irish dance are very structured and require having attitude which comes from self-confidence.  If you feel uncomfortable dancing you may have problems exhibiting this attitude.  Somewhere along the way, you have salsa and other Latin dances.

Dancing is fun and it is relatively easy.  You just have to connect with your body.  This is difficult for some of us, but if you learn to feel the rhythm, or in other words, feel the vibrations you can follow it very easily.  Remember when you are dancing, you do not have to be competing with anybody else; so it does not matter who is better.  Learn form others but always remember you are dancing to have fun and not to compete.
