Dating someone younger: Not always easy
We started to explore the subject of dating among couples with significant age differences. It all began when we started to receive stories from couples who were finding love when they opened their minds to dating anyone they felt the emotional connection with. We researched both scenarios: Older men with younger women (which has always been more common) and Older women with younger men. Since then we have heard from dozens of couples who are now "coming out" rather than hiding for the fear of public disapproval.
Unfortunately, public disapproval of such relationships (particularly older women dating younger men) is not limited to the US. It is more widespread. Here is a story of a girl from India (and she is not even old; she is only 27). Looks as if this couple may never get a chance to come out.
She writes, "You article is excellent. It is great to hear from you that loving a younger person is not a great sin. I personally feel as if our love got its recognition through your words. I am 27 and the guy with whom I am in love with is 21. He also loves me very much but finds it difficult to accept me in public and declare his love for me as we are Indians deeply rooted in tradition. So we can do nothing except sacrifice our love towards each other and live a normal indian life."
It is very sad to hear that this couple has to make such a huge sacrifice. Though we wonder if there is something that this couple can do: anything to be together. From what we know, people talk no matter what and if you stop listening they eventually shut up but the more you listen to them the more they talk. So they will talk if you marry a person of your age or older person or darker person or poor person or whatever.
We have written to this lady requesting her to write down her story in detail. We would like to publish her beautiful love story, but on a more profound note, this tradition has to change. If she does write back, the story will be online at LuvCube and it will hopefully open up the eyes of at least the intellectuals in India who might pick up the story and fight for change.
