How to find cheap travel deals?
A step wise program to spend your travel dollar wisely

By Lisa Kramer

A lot of couples have written to ask in response to our article on how to budget for your honeymoon asking how can they find travel (including airline tickets, hotels, cruises, rental cars, etc.) deals in a world where it is so confusing and too many businesses trying to convince you that they have the best deal.

Indeed it is a challenge and this article will help you plan a simple program so that you can find good deal (if not the cheapest) most of the time.  Before we get started, here are a few things you should know about vacations in romantic destinations, that tend to be so expensive:

  • Travel business is very competitive and that is why there are always deals provided you do your research well.

  • Technology has allowed companies to offer dynamic pricing (meaning that not only do prices change in real time, but also that the price given to you may be different based on your zip code).

  • While research will get you good deals, it is important to understand that lower prices mean more restrictions, poor offering, and chances for aggravation.

Steps for finding cheap travel deals

  • If you already have a destination and tentative schedule in mind, start off by first trying to get a sense of the lay of the land by checking out big travel websites like Expedia, Orbitz, and Travelocity.  Take good notes.  This will help you understand what you should expect to spend.  But you may not have to spend that much by taking the next step.

  • Check out the websites of major airlines that fly to these destination now that you know which ones these are.  Play with their tools to see how you can find lower fares by being more flexible or by flying during the weekend.  Do not forget to take a look at their deals that will not show up on other websites.  Also take a look at their vacation packages.  Again take notes.

  • Repeat the step for a rental car, if you plan to rent a car.

  • Now analyze your research to figure out how you can compromise and what is the cheapest (and of course, the most fun) option for your vacation.

  • At this point you may be ready for Priceline if that is something you enjoy trying.  With a little bit of flexibility you might get a great bargain.

  • Finally, do not forget the travel agents.  If you already know one or you can do a search for travel agents.  They often get a cut on business that they bring in and to attract customers they often pass on the savings to people like us.

The most important point to remember is that once you find the travel deal that fits your initial budget, just go ahead and finalize it.  Of course, you will miss some great bargains in the future in some cases, but prices also go up.
