Utila in
Honduras
Tropical beach paradise without
the price tag
One
of the things that couples prize on
their
honeymoon or a
romantic getaway is privacy and
many of them are willing to do
whatever they can to get it. Think
Brangelina in
Namibia - they rented the whole
place. In other words, privacy and
luxury come at a steep price. Many of
our readers have written to say that
they would like to enjoy the same
level of privacy and seclusion but do
not have the
financial resources. Well, we
might very well have the destination
for you where you can get most of what
you want without the huge price tag.

We
have already highlighted
Honduras, a country in
Central America and this time we
are talking about the tiny island of
Utila - not the more popular island of
Roatan which is still a great
destination but somewhat more
commercialized, and accordingly, a
little pricey.

Utila
is still one of the best kept secrets
and to the best of our knowledge, not
yet a place that many people visit,
but it has everything that one needs
to have a great
tropical beach vacation without
the price tag.
To
arrive in Utila, you can
fly to either Tegucigalpa or San
Pedro Sula (two large cities in the
country) from the United States. From
there on you can either take a very
short flight or take the ferry from La
Ceiba port (which is somewhat closer
from the San Pedro Sula airport). The
island has just a few thousand
inhabitants with no roads (and
therefore, not many motorized
vehicles). It is fun to go on a bike
or just walk to wherever you want to
go. While it is considered to be a
paradise for divers, you do not have
to do it if all you want to do is
spend time with your loved one either
on the beach or in your
room. |
Since
the island is not very well connected
with the rest of the world, it means
almost everything that you consume
there is either
locally grown or comes fresh from
the water. So do not expect fancy (and
expensive) restaurants.
Food is fresh and
delicious and incredibly cheap. We
also recommend that you try the local
beer Salva Vida.
Of
course there are luxury hotels like
Mango Inn,
Utila Lodge, and Colibri Hill
Resort, you can stay in many
inexpensive hotels for $10-30 a day.
If you plan on spending few weeks, you
might rent a whole apartment - a much
cheaper option since you can cook on
your own by
buying fresh ingredients locally.
