Labiaplasty plastic surgery procedure
While still a new procedure, many plastic surgeons now offer it

By Pierre Coda

Lorna is a fit and slim woman in her 40s. She has never had children and has a good relationship with her husband. She is, however, worried that her privates may not be in perfect shape. She asks, "While my husband has never said anything, I think my lips down there are a little bit too big. My husband has not been with many women so he does not know much but I wonder if I need labiaplasty plastic surgery. How do I decide?"

Indeed, this is a very uncomfortable topic for almost all women. We live in a world where it is just not appropriate to discuss these issues with our parents when we are growing up. And it is something that is relevant for both men (who constantly worry, wrongfully so, they are not big enough or do not last long enough) and women. Many people are uncomfortable discussing this with their spouse or doctor even when they grow up.

How to determine if you need labiaplasty plastic surgery?

  • Do you feel any discomfort, particularly when you wear tight fitting underwear or pants?  "If you have to fold it up and tuck it in like a shirt," then it is not a good look, according to Dr. Anthony Griffin, a plastic surgeon.

  • Do you experience pain or discomfort when you are intimate with your partner?

  • Does it look awkward in shape (the typical shape is like a butterfly)?

If so, it does not hurt to discuss this with a plastic surgeon. While some deformities are present naturally, others may arise due to disease or injury, especially from childbirth. For reasons that are not fully understood, women who undergo gastric bypass surgery or experience rapid weight loss, often develop floppy labia.

Labiaplasty (sometimes spelled as labioplasty) involves the creation or reshaping of the labia (lips) by removal of excess skin. Labiaplasty is also performed to revise anomalies and congenital conditions such as an unusually large inner labia.  (Related article:  Vaginoplasty)

As with other plastic surgery procedures, like a nose job (rhinoplasty), labiaplasty may be undertaken for functional reasons, aesthetic reasons, or a combination of the two. In most cases it is an elective procedure unless the doctor determines that you need it for medical reasons.  (Related:  How to make Jessica Simpson a virgin again)

At this time, there is very little information available on labiaplasty. In fact, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, does not even mention it on their website. Most plastic surgeons do not even offer this procedure. Very little academic literature is available on the subject. Having said that, some surgeons are now offering labiaplasty and the results for women who have had it are remarkable.

It is a fairly straightforward procedure with practically no chance of a complication. Depending on which plastic surgeon you pick and where she or he is based, expect to spend a few thousand dollars on the procedure. You can go home the very same day and be able to be intimate with your partner in six to eight weeks.  However, women who have it as part of their lower body rejuvenation or buttock augmentation, they take longer to recover.
