Art, history, music, parks, and
food

| I
have been watching with interest some
of the television commercials by
British Airways, particularly the one
that makes fun of us because of our
total ignorance of cricket.
Whether you like cricket or not,
London is still a great vacation spot
for couples of all ages. |

How to plan a
trip to London?
-
When I
traveled
to London a few years ago with my fiancée, Internet was not so
popular and we bought our tickets
through a travel agency that
posted a flyer in the company
cafeteria. Not any more you
need to be bothered by travel
agents. Websites like
Orbitz, CheapTickets,
Travelocity, Priceline,
Expedia, etc. offer
many discounts to London.
Similarly, airlines like British
Airways and
Virgin Atlantic are
always aggressively courting
Americans to visit London.
-
While we chose a
package (airfare, to-and-fro
transport, and hotel with
breakfast), we now realize that,
while convenient and less
expensive, we would have been
better off with more
freedom. Particularly
because England is an
English-speaking country (though I
still understand only 50% of what
they say), it is easy to get
around and do what you want.
-
Pick your timing
carefully. We went in May
but it was just too chilly at that
time of the year and we did not
pack accordingly. We ended
up buying some warm clothes there.
How to have fun
in London?
-
Do your research
before leaving. There is
just too much to do in London and
if you do not develop a schedule
before arriving you will not be
able to enjoy all the things that
the city offers.
-
First, come to
an agreement on what you want to
do and how much. For
instance, if all you want to do is
shop, you can do that literally for a
week and still have shopping
places to left. But it is
best to enjoy art, architecture,
history, and culture in
London. It is very
easy to get around either on the
tube (as they Londoners call the
subway) or in those very
old-fashioned taxis with extremely
polite drivers (if you have ridden
a cab in New York City you know
what I am talking about).
-
Do not miss the
landmarks: Trafalgar Square,
Buckingham Palace, London Eye,
Tower of London, Big Ben, etc.
-
Explore the
restaurants. While English
food is not my favorite, but
English food is not generally sold
in restaurants, it seems. We
had some great French, Italian,
Middle-eastern, and
Indian food
while in London.
