Are the results permanent?

The result is long term. The effects of natural aging, motherhood and weight loss fluctuations will affect the look. For these reasons, the surgery is not recommended if you are planning to have kids.

Weight fluctuations are as bad as pregnancy. When we lose weight, we also lose fat and this makes you look sagged and deflated. If you gain back the weight, you may fill up but it most probably will not recover its previous perkier condition.  Your weight should be stable after the surgery to prolong the results. So if you are planning to lose weight, do it before the surgery, get to a weight you can realistically maintain, and try to keep it stable.

Lift or implants?

For some patients, the doctors recommend to have breast implants in addition to the breast lift. This way the final result will be much better. The cost, of course, goes up. You are having two procedures at the same time.

Can an implant do the lift?

According to some doctors, when the drooping is minor, an implant can easily do the job making it look perkier. These cases are most common in case when a woman has a small cup. Dr. Bruck said that in some cases, when the patient has minor drooping and deflation, the implants actually look better than in a regular breast augmentation surgery case, because the skin will not be stretched.  However, in women with more pronounced drooping, the doctor will need to do both procedures: lift and implant

How much does it cost?

The most common range for this surgery in the US is from $5,000 to $6,000.   The cost of the surgery depends on where you have the surgery and with whom. In large, expensive metropolitan areas such as New York or Los Angeles, it is more expensive than in inexpensive areas such as Nebraska. The cost of living affects the cost of the surgery. Also, the prestige of the doctor affects the cost of the surgery and this is no place to look for bargains. Some plastic surgeons, who work with models and celebrities and get featured television and the media, often charge higher fees for surgery.

Who is a good candidate for mastopexy?

According to most doctors, a woman in good health (emotional and physical) is a good candidate. The doctor will further review your clinical history and your family’s clinical history to determine if you are a good candidate.

Some people may have very unrealistic expectations of what they can get out of the surgery. Most plastic or elective surgeries tend to raise people’s self esteem and make them feel better about themselves. But by itself a perkier, firmer body will not make you happier, wealthier, or stop a divorce or a breakup

Who is not a good candidate?

Women who do not have perfect health, who have problems that may aggravate the risk from anesthesia or healing are often not good candidates. But remember that the doctor has the last word and this is only a general guideline.

One other aspect to consider is how your body heals. This is especially important in this surgery, because of the visible scars. If you have a history of developing scars, you may develop larger than normal scars. Your doctor will evaluate the situation and recommend accordingly.

Smokers and plastic surgery

Smoking raises risks during surgeries, any surgery not only cosmetic surgery. You have to inform your doctor if you smoke and you will be required to stop smoking some time before the surgery. This is not a joke; you can die if you do not obey your doctor’s orders.

If you are nor willing to or cannot stop smoking, you should be honest with your doctor and let him or her evaluate the situation.

Recovering after the surgery

You may experience bruising, swelling, discomfort, numbness and dry skin in the days following the surgery. The scars will look pink and larger than they will eventually be. The doctor will give medication for the pain. The pain is not severe.  After the surgery you will wear a surgical bra or bandages. The doctor will review the result a few days after and remove the bandages. After this you may wear a special support bra for a few weeks.

Risks

All surgeries have risks. Besides the regular plastic surgery risks, some of the other risks are visible scars, infection, bleeding, and loss of sensation.
