Whenever
my wife and I go to New York, we never miss
a trip there. So when we went
there in the Fall of 2004, we decided
to spend a few hours. The first
thing that we saw was the flower
beds. While flowers in
most of the Northeast are starting to
die but not in the Rockefeller
Center. Of course, the lights
were on and
romantic couples were
skating on ice. My wife is a bit
scared of skating on ice but we just
watched all those couples. There
were hundreds of other couples and
families since it was a fairly
pleasant evening. We
were also lucky enough to be there
when there was a great exhibition of
artwork from Jonathan Borofsky going
on. In his artwork "Walking to the
Sky", a tall (we guessed it to be
over 100 ft) pole sprouts out of the ground
and there are several people literally
walking to the sky. What a way
to capture the fantasy of all of
us. And then there were three people
(statues really) standing at the bottom, looking up along with the rest of us.
We saw so many people bending in all
sorts of ways to get the right
photos. Since it was dark and
cloudy, we did not get the best photo
but you can see it on this page.
What we really wished were that it was
daytime with perfectly blue sky and
maybe a cloud or two. It would
be simply lovely to see all these
people walking to the sky.
We
spent a good two hours just walking
around and sat down on benches as many
other couples did. It was
obvious that several couples were
there on a date. What
else can you do in the area around
Rockefeller Center?
It all depends on
what you like to do but there is
literally something for
everyone. While we are talking
about what couples can do, whether you
are single or with your family, you
can still have a good time.
-
You can take a
tour of the Rockefeller Center
itself, NBC Studio (if you are a
TV fanatic), and of course, the
Radio City.
-
While there are
dozens of restaurants in the area,
my recommendation is to eat elsewhere. Whenever there
are a lot of tourists, food is bad
and expensive. (Related

Thai food within walking distance
from the Rockefeller Center)
-
If you are in
the mood for shopping then this is
a great area since all the
boutiques on Fifth Avenue are
right there.
-
And if you go
during winter, you can try some
skating. Take a look at the
video below.
