Vaginoplasty plastic surgery procedure
Should you have it?

By Pierre Coda

Tia is 42, a mother of three, and lives with her husband Greg in a suburb of Miami. Now that her kids are old enough not to need her attention 24X7, she wants to rekindle the passion in her marriage. "Pregnancy and being out of shape have taken a toll on my body, but now I want to look perfect. I have worked out for two years and I look great now. What I am concerned about is how I look down there. Not pretty! So I had labiaplasty. But now my husband thinks that I should also get vaginoplasty. What do you think? Will it help our life as a couple?" she asks.

Looks as if Tia is not alone. The demand for perfection in the most intimate of areas with the help of plastic surgery is growing. The reasons are as varied as the women who ask for the procedures. Desiring higher levels of gratification, a more aesthetically pleasing look, the ability to exercise without discomfort and the ability to wear all kinds of clothing are the most common reasons cited by patients. The most common procedures, the vaginoplasty and labiaplasty, have been around for decades, but have more recently come into prominence as elective surgeries.   (Related:  How to make Jessica Simpson a virgin again)

Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves the tightening of vaginal muscles and support tissues as well as the reduction of redundant vaginal mucosa (relaxed vaginal lining). Childbirth, trauma and even simply aging may cause the vagina to become stretched and the surrounding muscles lose their strength and tone. This loose feeling, that many women feel, is often noticed not only by them, but by their partners also during intercourse. Vaginoplasty decreases the diameter of the vagina, which results in increased friction during intercourse. After surgeries, women and their partners often report increased levels of satisfaction. The surgery is a standard gynecologic vaginal procedure where the vaginal vault and pelvic floor are made tighter and the foundation muscles of the vagina are made stronger. The G-spot which lies in the anterior proximal vagina is not affected by this procedure.  (Related article:  Hymen repair or hymenoplasty or revirgination)

According to Dr. Ronald Blatt, Medical Director of The Center for Vaginal Surgery in Manhattan, each procedure takes approximately 60-90 minutes to perform.  An additional hour is spent in the recovery room under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Most plastic surgeons choose general anesthesia since it makes it easy for the patient. In the post-operative phase, some pain is natural but like any other plastic surgery procedure, the pain can be reduced with the help of painkillers.

Like most other surgical procedures, you should expect that full recovery can take up to 8 weeks depending on how fast you heal. Since all sutures used are absorbable, they do not need to be removed. Your health insurance is unlikely to cover these surgeries because they are considered elective. Therefore, you should plan on spending the money yourself right away or consider financing for plastic surgery

The end result of this procedures is a combination of a more youthful appearance, improved sensation and a more comfortable and confident life with your partner. Many couples report an overall improvement in the quality of life. Vaginoplasty surgery fees are typically $4,500 at Dr. Blatt's clinic, but vary significantly by location.

If you think that you have the financial means and your plastic surgeon considers you fit for this plastic surgery procedure, then you must definitely consider it.  Remember though that plastic surgery is surgery and has risks associated with it.  So make sure that you consult your family doctor as well as the plastic surgeon before making up your mind.
