How to start dating?

Penelope in La Jolla, California writes, “I have not dated for many years. I was obese, lost my self-confidence and due to that, I did not interact with people much. After realizing how bad I looked, I followed the South Beach Diet and now that I have lost weight, I feel much better about myself. Since the last time I dated there was no online dating, I am somewhat intimidated by it.  How can I make new friends and a potential boyfriend?”

Congratulations on your new body and self-confidence. Dating is always intimidating, but so do not think of it as a challenge. Instead, take it as an adventure. To meet new people in the United States, especially in certain parts of the country, is difficult. To make friends is even more difficult. As my pastor said, “There are a lot of opportunities to meet friendly people, but few to make friends.” Even in church and in the office sometimes, it is difficult to meet people or the type of people we want to meet.  However, with a few simple steps, you may be on your way to meet the type of people that you want to spend time with.  Making friends is all about taking the initiative, being responsive, and caring for people.  The more you care for others, you will realize that others will care for you.  (Related article:  Lose weight by reading positive messages)

  • Volunteer for an organization that you like and you think you may meet people youPhoto of a woman showing off her slim body after weight loss. like. If you are an animal lover perhaps the Humane Society; or if you love arts, maybe a local museum. It is important to do something that you like.  
  • Join an organization according to your interest. Let’s say you dream of being a technology entrepreneur one day, so join a group that serves this type of people. All cities have them and you can find them by doing a simple search or using your local library. It is important to enlist in activities and participate to get to know people. In any case, as you join activity groups of different types, you will also be casually networking, which is a great way to expand your group of friends.
  • Join a group activity like hiking, mountaineering, or other outdoor activities.
  • You may also join groups online. If you are nervous about dating, this could be an option for you so that you can become comfortable making friends first and then pursue a romantic relationship.
  • Have a party. Invite everybody you know and ask them to bring a friend. It does not have to be fancy; it should be aimed at having lots of fun. Once you invite a dozen people to your party, chances are that over the course of a year, if each one of them has one party, you will have a minimum of 12 parties to go to each year. That is not bad.
  • Friends come in all colors and sizes. Do not discard people because they do not meet your criteria of who is a great friend. You never know who will introduce you to a special person.
  • Last, but not the least, online dating is the biggest thing happening in the dating world right now. Take a chance. They are not free, but the price is very affordable and you are likely to meet people who are serious about dating and relationship. Give yourself a chance and do not close your door to this very effective method.
