How to date a woman from Japan?

There is enormous interest in dating women from Japan, not only from westerners but also from other men in Asia. This trend has further amplified after Japan has started to export more of its pop culture to Asia, many Japanese idols are actually now popular among other Asian countries, and Japanese fashion has been rapidly embraced by Asian men and women.

Richard, a Korean-American in Clinton, New Jersey, writes, "I like Japanese girls. Because I am of Korean origin, I recognize that Japanese girls may not consider me as a boyfriend because of my race. However, what I don't understand is that I hear a lot of international men are very popular among Japanese girls. Why not other Asian men? Do most Japanese women prefer white men only and never consider Asian men of other countries? Why is that? Do Asian guys have a chance with Japanese girls at all? Or that white guys have all the advantage?"

Actually this is one of the most commonly asked questions and for obvious reasons. It is very well known in Japan and elsewhere that Japanese women have a clear preference for what they think as a true 'gaijin' (blond, blue eyes, tall, romantic, etc.) - the image perpetuated by Hollywood movies and magazines. In the process these women ignore African Americans, Hispanic Americans and anyone else, including other Asians (many Japanese do not like to think of themselves as Asians). The important feature is appearance rather than nationality (thus Europeans with similar looks also succeed).

Having said that. it is not true that men unlike the ones described above have no chance of success at all. Actually all kinds of men find love and romance in Japan including blacks from the US or Africa, Middle Eastern men, and other Asian men from almost all countries, though in relatively small numbers. However, many Japanese women are essentially looking to have a fling with a foreigner to see what the fuss is about and in that case they might as well go with their dream boy.

When you try to approach them it would not be surprising that you will find them to be cold and not responsive. We have heard instances of online romances gone bad when photos were exchanged or race disclosed. But some Japanese women are genuinely interested in certain cultures or some men can charm them in other ways, or plain and simple, some Japanese women just do not ever have any luck with their dream boy.

So do not lose hope and if you like someone, make sure you pursue it and keep pursuing it till you make it. You have to keep trying till you find that one Japanese woman that will like YOU.
