With
online dating becoming the norm,
it is common for couples to get
married even though they may not have
the same native tongue. In other
words, while basic English is fine to
chat online, but in order to have
a
solid relationship,
couples need to communicate. And
that means learning a new language –
whatever that is.
Tom,
who found his
Russian bride online, is realizing
that while his wife needs to improve
her English, he has to improve his
Russian in order to make their
relationship better. “Like many
Americans, I am terrified of learning
a foreign language. I know that it is
important for my relationship, but I
don’t even know how to start. Please
help!” he writes. |
| The
best way to
learn a foreign language is
through practice, practice, and
even more practice. Learning a
language is about repetition.
Try to always practice what you
know. Do not waste any chance
you have to speak it. Since you
are married to a native speaker,
talk to her as much as you can
in Russian – and use English
when you do not know the
equivalent word. For others who
do not have a partner at home to
practice, go where the native
speakers are. For instance, if
you are
learning Spanish, shop in a
supermarket where there may be
Spanish speaking employees and
try to talk to them. Join a
language club or make your own
if you cannot find it. Browse
magazines in your language of
choice in the bookstore and try
to watch television programs in
that language, though stick to
drama/entertainment rather than
delving into news right away.

Take
small but consistent steps. Study
every day. Put it on your schedule.
Maybe it is just 5 minutes each day,
but it has to be done regularly
without fail. That is what Eva
Longoria is doing. She is
committed to speak French (the mother
tongue of Tony Parker) and is making
slow but steady progress.Make
it fun. Think of the rewards. In your
case, it is
better communication with your wife
and her family. For others it can mean
exploring a new culture, or getting a
new job. Even if you are learning it
because of your job, you must still
try to have fun doing it. If you enjoy
it, it will be easier to study, to
practice, and therefore, easier to
master it.
Forget
about the fast and easy way to learn a
language – it doesn’t exist. This
sounds like
losing weight with one of those magic
pills. There are no known
shortcuts to learning a language and
if someone is trying to sell a
book/program/lessons to learn a
language in an unrealistic timeframe
don’t waste your time and money.
Learn
it well from day One. Do not
accumulate mistakes. Try to learn
pronunciation and grammar since the
beginning. It might seem cumbersome
and tedious and it will look as if
this is slowing you down in your
learning, but long-term this is the
best way.
Vacation
in a country that speaks the language
you are learning. So
visit Russia often and spend some
time there with her family members.
Other people may want to go on a
learning vacation. |
