Makeovers for men

What can a woman do to help her man learn to be stylish?

By Lisa Kramer

You love your man, but Oh boy, does he dress bad! How to tell him or help him without hurting his feelings and ego? There are many ways to do this. Remember that you do not need to scream to be received positively and to be effective. Subtle messages are better and more powerful.  (Related article:  Plastic surgery for men)

Do it in a positive way. For example, if he is wearing a color that you think is good for him, but the cut is terrible, tell him that the color blue makes him look really handsome, but do not comment on the cut of the pants. Next time that he wears a nice pant tell him that the pant fits him really well and maybe in blue color it will make him look hot. Ask him about the brand, where did he buy it, and why it is a good idea to stick to a brand once you figure out that their clothes fit you well. The chances are that next time you see him he might be wearing a blue pant with a great fit.

Take time. Do not tell him more than one thing at the time. If you do he might think that you are acting like his mom. Offer to shop with him next time.  Try to understand his preferences and suggest combinations. Tell him in a pleasant way to try it on since most men buy stuff without trying and then even if they find that it does not fit so well, they are too lazy to bring it back. That is how they accumulate their wardrobe of ill-fitting clothes.

If you see something in a magazine that you think may look good on him, cut the picture and show it to him. Or when you are watching television together point out what you like. This is a better way than actually praising or pointing to a real person since he might get jealous (How to overcome jealousy). Little by little he will learn to dress better.

-- If he does not clean his shoes, I am not sure what to tell you, but this bothers many women. Do you really want to date this man? You might want to give subtle hints again but this habit may also be an indicator of a larger problem: his overall lifestyle may just as well be as messy as his shoes.

Try to give him a gift certificate for a manicure and go with him so that he does not feel that he is being sent to the spa because something was wrong with him. If you know how to do it and have the kit, you can give him a manicure at home. This will make him feel good and think that is it OK for a man to take care of himself even if he is very macho. Plus, a manicure is a great way to connect emotionally to your partner.  (Related link:  Does he also have acne? or bacne)

Do not expect immediate results, but with patience and perseverance, I have seen changes that are literally miracles. It's not that men do not want to change; it's just that in most cases they were never taught these things by anyone and as they grew up, they got too carried away by the macho environment in college. However, if they realize that it is important for them to do it to go ahead in their careers and to succeed with women, they will do it.  (Related link:  Can an Average Joe get a great girl?)
