Skin care for men

Yes, even men should take care of their skin

By Don Martinez

Jonathan from Nahant, MA, writes, "My wife and I have been married for 21 years and we are now in our mid-40s.  It's not that I am having a mid-life crisis, but I see that I look much older than her.  My skin just does not have the glow that she has.  She has always taken care of herself and I have always been a macho.  Please help."

You literally need a makeover.  It is not so often that most men think of taking care of their skin.  If you are like most men, you shave in the morning (and I know how rough some of us get on our faces while shaving ourselves), maybe put an aftershave lotion, and get out of the house.  Some men might have a face cream but that is pretty much it.  Do you know that there is hardly any difference between the skins of a woman and a man?  Do you know that you need to protect your skin from the sun, make sure that it is hydrated, and provide all the nutrients that the skin needs to stay healthy?  And yes, like you need a haircut from time too time, your skin also needs some scrubbing (to get rid of the dead cells that can block the pores from breathing and make you age faster). Just in case you did not know, skin is also an organ and has its own maintenance requirements like any other organ in the body.

What is the minimum skin care that a man needs?

Protection against sun:  There should be no argument at all why we need to protect our skin against the sun.  First and foremost is the risk of skin cancer.  Second, exposure to sun makes the skin older soon.  So the part of the body that a woman sees first should look the best.

Skin cleanser:  I know we men are lazy and end up putting some cheap soap on our faces every day.  This is an absolute No-No.  What you need is a cleanser.  It eliminates impurities on the skin (sweat, dirt, etc.) and is not harsh on the skin as most soaps are.  If you insist on using soaps, try to buy those that have no fragrance and artificial color.

Moisturizer:  Yes, those of us who are constantly inside buildings get easily dehydrated.  During the long winter months in most parts of the US, our skin also deals with very dry air if at all we get exposed to any.  Most of the time we are indoors in heated homes and other buildings where air can be excessively dry.  A moisturizer is a must for the skin to function properly.

Face scrub:  Remember I told you about all those dead cells on the skin.  If these are not removed, they accumulate and do not allow fresh skin cells to come out.  Over time, your skin looks ‘old’, ‘flaky, ‘dead’, and lacks radiance.  Do not think that Ben Affleck’s skin is only a gift of Nature!  All celebrities look so damn attractive because of greater care that they take of themselves and right personal care products that they use.  When you see them in public, more often than not, they are also wearing makeup to conceal skin imperfections.  So at least a weekly scrub allows all the dead cells to be washed off, leaving behind a shiny skin.

Can you do more?

Absolutely.  I personally see no embarrassment in taking care of yourself.  Even if you are called names, or a metrosexual, I see no reason why that should be a problem.  Our body is the only thing that we have as long as we live.  While I think that a good body allows me to attract more women, well, that should not be the only reason to take care of the body.

Apart of products that are needed for basic hygiene, the ones that I think are the minimum, as described above, you also need to nourish your skin.  With these nourishing products applied regularly, you are basically delaying aging.  Remember, it is much easier to delay wrinkles than to eliminate them.  In fact I am not convinced that wrinkles can be truly eliminated but my discussions with experts tell me that good skin care can definitely delay onset of old age by at least a decade.
