Adult acne treatment

Kristina asks, "Can you please give me advice on how to get rid of my acne? I have a very oily skin and have used several products to treat my acne but still nothing seems to work."

Acne is very complex; there is no one cure for it. It is actually a skin condition. We have ways to improve it but not to cure it. The most effective treatments are used by dermatologists. It appears that Accutane is the most effective treatment. Accutane is available by prescription only

Generally speaking, acne requires more thorough treatment than just using creams. We have seen good results with eating a healthy diet, avoiding bad carbs such as anything with white flour and sugar. Also ingestion of good fats instead of bad fats appears to help. Good fats include olive oil, any nut oil (avoid peanuts), organic butter instead of margarine, canola oil, unrefined soy oil, etc.

Recent studies mentioned that a deficit in selenium may also cause acne. So check on your selenium intake. Foods to avoid are peanut oil (most Chinese foods are cooked in this oil), salt in excess, sodas and most processed foods. You can also try taking a selenium supplement.

This should improve your acne in addition to your skin care regimen. Try not to use products that contain mineral oil and products that make your skin very dry.
